A Fresh Take on What to Do With the Basement

Billard room

Most basements have at least one or two chaotic aspects. It is the afterthought space in the home and typically in desperate need of organization, structure, and style. Let’s sort through the piles of sports gear, art supplies, and tools and take a look at 5 fresh ways to create a beautiful, efficient, and usable basement.

1. Create a Modern Multifunctional Retreat

Basements usually take the form of one big room. This structure resembles a modern home’s open floor plan, giving you flexibility to divide the space into functional zones that work best for you. Do you need a lounge area? Workout space? Dining room and bar for entertaining?

The size of your basement will dictate how many functional zones you can comfortably design, but normally two to three does the trick. Keep in mind that your basement doesn’t have to cater to just one person. The beauty of separate functional zones is that each family member can inherit his or her own space. For example, the kids can have a play area, mom can have an art studio, and dad can have a home gym.

Once you have established your functional zones, it is time to update your basement’s dated elements. Think hardwood floors, light fixtures, and faucets. Modernizing these features will lighten and brighten the space creating style, comfort, and livability.

2. Implement a Sports Viewing Zone

Let’s face it – watching sports is fun, frequently community-oriented, and often very loud. Perhaps you don’t mind everyone parading through your home for the big game, but you also can’t deny the appeal of a separate sports viewing area – a place where getting rowdy is always invited and won’t disrupt the rest of the household.

We still suggest splitting the basement into two functional areas even though they will be serving a similar purpose. This strategy helps create a visually complete space that does not sacrifice style. Consider creating a bar area and a lounge area, each optimized for watching your favorite games. Install separate TVs in each area – perhaps a smaller TV for bar seating and a larger, big screen for the lounge area.

Make the two areas cohesive. Try the same flooring or carry an accent color from one zone to the next. You may even want to select a common theme. It is also okay to implement some different attributes within each area to evoke slightly different feelings. Perhaps the bar is upscale while the lounge is more “put-up-your-feet” casual.

3. Consider an Elegant Lodge Atmosphere

If you crave coziness within a luxury-oriented environment, a space reminiscent of a ski lodge could be your ideal basement.

Start with neutral wall paint that provides an earthy-feel. Avoid stark white and instead try beige or light gray. Add natural elements, such as wood and stone finishes, to create warmth and comfort.

As a finishing touch embrace elegant and luxurious fabrics. Include the likes of chenille and velvet. Find them in warm colors such as browns and deep creams to enhance the cozy, comfortable atmosphere.

4. Fashion a Beach Inspired Cove

If you are in need of a space that facilitates relaxation, consider a beach theme. Its natural color palette pulls inspiration from the sky, sea, and sand creating a peaceful retreat out of any basement.

What is great about the beach theme is it can be implemented in any functional area. Try a snack bar, a guest room, a place to entertain, a kids’ playroom, or even an office.

5. Design an Artistic Expression

Embrace color to transform your chaotic basement into an organized masterpiece. If you have a favorite artist, or are an artist yourself, consider using select pieces as your inspiration. Design your basement around these pieces using their hues and/or themes as a way to implement accents and a color palette.

Don’t be afraid to really crank up the personal touches here. This space is an expression of you so let it speak beyond the artwork with photographs, antique furniture, and whatever else makes you, you.
