Discreet Blend of Old and New Defining “House 3″ in Melbourne, Australia

House 3 by Coy Yiontis Architects consists of a renovation and extension of an existing two-level home on a site in Melbourne, Australia. According to the project developers, the strategy was to “divide the house into two discreet buildings, old and new, separated by a large central courtyard and reconnected by a glazed link. The courtyard with its pool, gives the new building its northern aspect and is conceived as an extension of the communal spaces of the home which surround it on three sides. It also bestows the old building a formal autonomy”. House 3 currently serves the daily living needs of an extended family of eight.

A bedroom was planned for each of the four children of the family, in addition to the parents’ bedroom. Large living spaces encouraging interaction and a swimming pool were also key aspects of the design. The project is not what one could grand: “Considered planning and the integration of indoor and outdoor achieve a generosity and variety of communal spaces for the family at odds with the actual size of the building. Private areas are restrained and humble. It is an urban home that functions successfully for a multi-generational family and its evolving needs.” [Photography courtesy of Coy Yiontis Architects]inspiring home (2)inspiring home (3)inspiring home (4)inspiring home (6)inspiring home (7)inspiring home (8)inspiring home (9)inspiring home (10)inspiring home (11)inspiring home (13)inspiring home (14)plans1plans12
