Combatting the Boring Foyer

The foyer serves several functions for your home and yet is often considered last when progressing through the decorating process. We suggest moving the entryway to the top of your to-do list as it is your first impression space as guests enter your home. It should be strategically planned to set a tone, send a message and serve a purpose.

Consider these 3 décor strategies as you take your foyer from boring and bland to inspired and functional.

Traditional Décor Meets Relative Scale

When you think of an entryway what comes to mind? Traditional foyer décor often includes a table, a rug, a mirror, a chandelier, a vase and another small personal touch. These six items can create a beautiful space for any entry be it wide, narrow, long, high-ceilinged, grandeur or modest. The trick is to pay careful attention to the relative scale of all items.

Start with the table. Select one that is large enough to serve its function, but not too large as to overwhelm the space. Entryways can easily become boxy so consider a round or a half moon table to counterbalance the look.

Rugs are a foyer staple as they are a quick and easy way to spice up your entrance. Consider stripes as a way to visually and physically draw guests into your home. We also suggest an all-weather material for this rug.

Mirrors are the perfect foyer accessories as they reflect light naturally opening up the space.

Chandeliers are the light fixture of choice as they keep the pathway clear and can serve several décor functions. For example, vaulted ceilings can be visually lowered while the perfect blend of ambiance and functional light can be provided. Special attention to detail and scale here makes the chandelier’s execution a success.

Vases are virtually synonymous with a foyer. Think large and colorful. They easily add height and visual interest without having to deploy multiple accessories. Select a faux flower arrangement, branches or rotate fresh flowers.

Finally, add a personal touch. You need to make the entryway way “you” and let it set the tone for the rest of your home. Consider picture frames, books, candles or figurines. Limit these pieces to five to seven individual items or you will be on the verge of a clutter.

Create a Focal Point

Every other room in your home has a focal point and your foyer should not be any different. Perhaps the easiest way to create this focal point is to use the mirror listed in the previous strategy. Hang it so that its center is eye level that way your eye will be automatically drawn to it.

Using your table as the focal point is also a great strategy.

Remember Its Function

The foyer is where you transition from your outside life to your private life. Ask yourself, “What do I need to do when I first get home? Do I take off my coat? My shoes? Do I need a place to sort the mail? Do my keys need a home? How do I best prepare to transition to my home life?”

Even small entryways can help you accomplish all of these necessary tasks. To create the storage you need use your table strategically. Some side tables have drawers and cupboards built right in. Otherwise consider covering your table with a cloth that falls to the floor. You can easily store shoes and umbrellas under it where no one will see them. You can also consider decorative storage baskets that slide effortlessly under the table and don’t need the cloth to hide them.
