Let’s get this out of the way first: Whatever type of pattern you want for your home, whatever pattern makes you happy or suits your existing décor or fits into the new design you’re planning, is appropriate – for you. But let’s face it – the trendiest patterns are the ones you’re going to find most easily, and hot patterns come and go with the seasons. Whether you want to be inside or outside of the box is up to you, but here’s a closer look at the patterns that have had their heyday and up-and-coming alternatives.
Out: Animal print
In: Cowhide
Leopard and tiger prints sometimes toe the line of respectability, just one pillow away from over-the-top, but these exotic patterns may have finally jumped the shark. The new version of this long-standing trend stays in the animal family, however. Cowhide (or hair on hide) is coming off of the floor and making its way to couches, cushions, and tables. As with all animal prints, the authentic, natural item comes with controversy, even if there is a humane way of obtaining otherwise-wasted animal hides, so synthetic may be your best bet if you dare to delve into this arena.

Out: Ikat
In: Curdoroy and macrame
Ikat is a slightly hippie, slightly Midwestern pattern that’s slightly masquerading as a texture. Because this pattern has morphed from interior design all the way to paper plates, it might be time to rejuvenate your décor. Instead of faux texture, go for the real deal – and head back to the 1970s to get it. Curdoroy upholstery and macramé wall pieces are taking center stage.

Out: Chevron
In: Loose geometric lines
Chevron is kind of a love-it or hate-it pattern. And this one may have had its day in the sun – in fact, it’s had so many days in the sun it is burned to a crisp. Chevron can be found in everything from rugs to upholstery, tea towels to pillows. But if you’re still interested in a bit of line and structure, and if the spring 2015 fashion week is any indication, loose geometric shapes are poised to make their mark on the interior design world

Out: Oversized floral
In: Stripes with florals
Florals never really go out of style, but there are always new incarnations of floral patterns that take center stage. Mixed patterns are more “now” than larger-than-life florals, like stripes with florals (which is also a highlight of the fashion runways).

Out: Overused catchphrases
In: Your own word art
“Keep Calm and Carry On” is a British catchphrase, and it’s been so overdone (no matter what phrase follows “Keep Calm”) that a display of it in your home kind of screams: dorm room! Get away from the gimmick but stay true to your personality by adding word art that is all you rather than a clever phrase attributed to someone else.
